POSITION:  ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN / SCIENTIST

LOCATION:  Fort St. John and Grande Prairie

OPTIONS: Full time, hourly, summer student, and camp/shift work positions available

ROY NORTHERN LAND AND ENVIRONMENTAL is an expanding progressive surface land and environmental consulting firm with an interest in oil and gas, forestry, mining, energy, and agricultural industries, as well as municipal authorities throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and Canada’s north. We employ a team of over 80 staff members located in our Fairview, Calgary, Fort St. John, and Terrace offices, and we offer interdisciplinary expertise to develop environmental solutions for our clients throughout western Canada.  For 40 years, we have directly assisted clients in regulatory application and have provided consulting expertise on environmental legislation, regulations and guideline compliance related to project planning, development, and reclamation. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or graduate of a recognized Post Secondary institution in the field of Environmental Sciences (including biology, ecology, soil science, physical geography, plant science, etc.)
  • No experience necessary, but and relevant environmental experience is a bonus
  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office
  • Current Safety Tickets (preferred)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Residency

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office
  • An understanding of applicable environmental regulations, guidelines and associated industry practices
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Strong awareness of health and safety issues, good situational awareness, and a safety conscious attitude
  • Ability to manage time and priorities effectively
  • Ability to maintain accurate and up to date field information
  • Some knowledge or demonstrated interest in any combination of wetlands, watercourses, fish habitat, rare plants and vegetation, soil classification, timber volume assessment, wildlife assessments, bird and nest surveys, hydrology, environmental regulations
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Ability to work under harsh conditions and weather on occasion
  • Physically fit and can endure long days in the field in challenging terrain

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in team environment, working closely with Project Managers and co-workers to complete fieldwork programs
  • Prepare and coordinate project documentation and equipment for field programs
  • Participate in field data collection programs (i.e., watercourse, wetland, vegetation, soil, timber, wildlife assessments, bird sweeps, river flow measurements)
  • Collect, handle, and ship samples of various environmental samples
  • File and manage all project related field and analytical notes including some data entry
  • Maintain equipment and/or coordinate equipment for repairs
  • Assist with preparation of environmental technical report writing including preparation and review of Scout Summary Reports, Watercourse Classification and Mitigation Reports, Wetland Classification and Mitigation Reports, Wildlife Summary Reports, Pre-Construction Assessments
  • On occasion cross over to help other departments (e.g., assist our Archaeology and Remediation Teams)
  • Undertake assignments that may involve travel and periods of time away from home/office
